SHARKS IN SAN BLAS

By: Enrique "Guiturro" Capua

They had already spent several days since we arrive to San Blas, we were comfortably housed in the Cabins Door of the Sun of Tito Grimaldi, they would be the 21:00 hs when Tito hits the door of the cabin to spend the wireless telephone, of the other side this Mike inviting us up-to-date following to accompany him to look for sharks.

Although the embarked fishing of sharks was not inside our plans, "Mike's" offer (Miguel Ángel Frays) - proprietor of the house of homonymous fishing located in the entrance to the coastal avenue and specialist in this modality to accompany him in the exit hired by an old one his client, we found an excellent opportunity for, although we would not fish, to register all the experiences that can be picked up in this exit type

At nine in the morning we are in the beach with Mike and their client - Daniel Marianetti fisherman of Fields Mejía a "all land" already veteran of this fishing type that takes several seasons visiting San Blas in search of the big sharks and, as it counted us, it counts among their trophies a remarkable escalandrún of 160 Kg.. and little more than two meters of longitude.

The day it was presented cloudy and with something of wind, ideal conditions according to Mike since the sun would not bother us and "the dance" won't be so brave when arriving to the fishing area, since the same one is located in an area of open sea and the conditions are not the same ones that are given in the case of the varied one.

Six canes of great robustness with pasahilos and sheave pointers, enormous "Penn" with loads of nylon of a diameter of 0,70 and 0,80 and some fishhooks, the famous Tartuna, of a size and grosor so impressive that, although none of us mentioned it, I believe that both thought of the tranquilizing thing that he/she turned out to know that he/she will be Daniel who would face what was that he/she lit up in similar apparels.

We carry out the first stop in a point in which the ecosonda accused enough activity under the surface; while Mike, José and Daniel embodied the apparels tiburoneros with heads of flat, and even flat whole, and they moved away them with the aid of small globes, we were suggested to prove with our light teams in order to detect the presence of other species, not without before to recommend us to regulate the star meetly in the face of the possibility that I/we were fastened some cazón. We were not given this possibility, regrettably; but already in the first ones you rush we realized that we were floating on an authentic fish" "soup: they hardly deepened a couple of meters, the fishhooks were attacked frantically by whitings to the point that just by allowing some seconds to pass after the first one nailed it was insured the one "bends you"; this took us to eliminate one of the fishhooks, because to manage a plumb line of 400 grs. plus the weight of two robust preys is not very comfortable when it is to maintain the stability on a floor that he/she doesn't stop to move.

Seeing that our activity with the varied one didn't diminish, and before the unavoidable one it fleshes of the willing baits for the sharks, Mike decided to change location, following the maxim that where the shark walks the varied one it escapes. In the following wait point this premise was confirmed: the whitings practically disappeared, replaced by some that another itches very isolated of gatuzos - what was a good indicator according to Mike - and little time later sounded the first cicada: a soft touch, a short displacement while he/she took the cane, Mike it pointed out that for the one taken it was surely a gatopardo. It allowed to leave line freely during some seconds and then it applied two or three potent cañazos before putting the team in hands of Daniel that affirmed in the seat the "pulseada" it began to bring closer the piece to the side of the craft; meanwhile José that one of the lines was rising to give bigger space to the fight, receives a touch and without doubting he gives some cañazos ands of Daniel that affirmed in the seat the "pulseada" it began to bring closer the piece to the side of the craft; José's piece turned out to be a gatopardo of about fifteen kilos that once brought closer it was hoisted on board without difficulty; meantime Daniel continued with his fight, until little by little his shark was surrendering and finally it was brought closer.

When the convenience was already suggesting of preparing us to return to earth, another time it sounded the cicada of a reel. This time the one "taken" went different to the previous ones; now a more lingering and more continuous race that Mike identified as that of a bacota was; in the face of the possibility that was a piece of considerable behavior all we occupy our positions: Daniel to the cane, Mike and José to the harpoons and us to the photographic cameras fighting to obtain the best possible takings without finishing in the water and with so not very friendly company it fences our.

The task was quite harder in this opportunity; it was noticed that this shark was bigger and stronger than both previous, so we stayed expectant; after a good while of to give and to recover nylon the shark began to get tired losing land, and little by little it was brought closer until being at a distance that allowed to assure their definitive capture.

Already advanced the afternoon we undertook the return to the coast, a so much hit but satisfied, and after assuring the craft and the pictures of rigor we say goodbye to our new friend Daniel trusting find in some moment again and in any place that the fishing summons us.

Go our gratefulness so much to Mike and José to invite us to this exit like for the good on humor of manifesto in the hours that we share on board.

Greetings

Enrrique "Guiturro" Capua
